Job roles in the Probation Service
There are a wide range of jobs in the Probation Service, both in an operational context and within the Support Services function.
Operationally we have both qualified and non-qualified staff that work with offenders with the aim of preventing further offending and protecting the public. Our Probation Service Officers and Probation Officers do this through assessment, support and supervision of offenders. They are supported by a team of Administrative Officers who provide a comprehensive administrative and support service. Within all of our district offices, the reception service is provided by District Receptionists.
The aims of the Service are reinforced through the delivery of effective, accredited programmes by our Programme Tutors, which offenders are often required to attend.
Offenders who are required to carry out work in the community are instructed and supervised whilst undertaking this work by Community Payback Supervisors.
There are several Approved Premises within the West Yorkshire District, and the staff that work within them, such as Residential Officers and Assistant Residential Officers offer a high level of supervision for residents.
Within the Support Services function based at Head Office we have a variety of departments which support the operational work carried out in the District, including Information Services, Human Resources, Finance, Legal Services and Public Relations. There are many varied roles within these sections, both qualified and non-qualified.
Recruitment of Probation Officers is through the Trainee Probation Officer programme which takes place annually. Recruitment for all other grades of staff, both operational and non-operational, takes place periodically throughout the year as and when the need arises. All vacancies are advertised on the Careers section of the website.
