Data Protection
West Yorkshire Probation is dependant on information systems in order to function on a day-to-day basis, to meet aims set by the Home Office and generally to work with offenders. As a large proportion of the data held on systems relate to individuals, it is essential that compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998 is established, ensuring public confidence in the way these systems are operated.
The Eight Principles of Data Protection
- To process personal data fairly and lawfully.
- To process personal data for specified purposes and not in a way incompatible with those purposes.
- To ensure that personal data is adequate, relevant and not excessive for those purposes.
- To ensure that personal data is accurate and kept up to date.
- To ensure that personal data is kept for no longer than is necessary for the purposes for which it is processed.
- To process personal data in accordance with the rights of individuals.
- To process personal data in a secure environment.
- Not to transfer personal data to a country that does not offer an adequate level of protection to the individual.
