Calderdale Community Payback Projects

Offenders and supervisor on a Community Payback project renovating the pavillion at Holmes Park

Holmes Park

Working in partnership with Calderdale wardens, Community Payback teams are currently helping to renovate a timber pavilion at Holmes Park in Luddendenfoot, Halifax. Work includes repairs to the woodwork and painting the woodwork. Offenders are also painting the changing rooms and day nursery within the council property in the park.

Painting and Decorating

In partnership with Build and Leeds College of Building, 12 offenders have gained an OCNW qualification in painting and decorating while undertaking their Community Payback hours. The course took place at St Thomas’s Hall, in Greetland, Halifax. Work included painting the main hall, which has been much appreciated by the church as it had insufficient funding to pay for professional painters and decorators.

Joinery

Nine offenders carrying out Community Payback across Calderdale and Kirklees have completed OCNW qualifications in joinery. The course took place at Jamia Muhammed Nooria Mosque in Halifax. Work included erecting stud partitions, ramps and doing joinery work. The labour provided by offenders helped to make the building more accessible to the local community attending for worship. Offenders were tutored by Leeds College of Building and were supervised by the Probation Service

Site Clearance - Angel Escarpment

We are working with Calderdale Council (Environmental Services) to assist with clearing rubbish from areas affected by fly tipping. Calderdale Council have secured enough funding to provide a van, tools and equipment to safely clear 12 areas to make them cleaner and safer. Angel escarpment is one of the areas that offenders have recently cleared of litter and rubbish.

Westbank Wall, Illingworth

Council wardens have asked Community Payback to help building a stone wall to prevent fly tipping and stop vehicles from being abandoned. The wardens are working alongside supervised teams of offenders and are instructing them on stone wall building. These skills will increase the offenders' future work opportunities.

Sandbagging

Community Payback continue to help filling sandbags that are used as flood defences. Sand is delivered to the probation centre along with bags and pallets and then teams fill them for the council to take away.
